The Ann Arbor Grail Singers are seeking new members!
We’re dedicated to making beautiful music, especially focusing on lesser-known repertoire from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods—with a particular interest in women composers. We are also the only choir in Southeastern Michigan that includes Gregorian Chant in almost all our concerts.
The group rehearses Tuesday evenings (7:15 – 9:15) during the academic year. We do not meet in the summer or in the second half of December, and we usually reconvene just before or after Labor Day with a full-day rehearsal and potluck lunch. Our September rehearsals are “open rehearsals,” where interested singers are invited to attend and either join in or observe. Formal rehearsals each season end with our last Spring concert, although we may schedule a “preview” reading rehearsal in June.
Most rehearsals are held at our treasurer’s Ann Arbor home (off Newport Road), and the dress rehearsals before each concert are held at the concert venue. Singers are responsible for attending rehearsals (no more than 3 absences a season) and for learning the music. We expect singers to be able to sing with a straight tone (no vibrato). The choir also has dues of $25/year for each singer, to help pay our expenses.
We usually give two concert programs a year. When we hold a Fall concert, we usually schedule it in November, before Thanksgiving. Because some of our members sing in church choirs, this approach avoids conflicts with pre-Christmas rehearsals. It also means we’re not competing for audiences with the many other musical performances that take place during the holiday season. Before each of our public concerts, we also present the music in a community outreach program at a local assisted living or senior housing facility.
Please consider joining the Ann Arbor Grail Singers! For more information or directions to our September open rehearsals,
