The Wind Cries Mary: Music of Machaut, Palestrina, Stravinsky, and Hildegard of Bingen
In Spring 2024, the Ann Arbor Grail Singers performed a program of music by Guillaume de Machaut, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Igor Stravinsky, and Hildegard of Bingen.
Machaut’s Messe de Nostre Dame (Mass of Our Lady) is the first known setting by one person of the Ordinary of the Mass. Composed before 1365, it showcases Machaut’s four-voice polyphonic writing with some brief chant interludes.
The program also featured chants by Hildegard (12th century), a Magnificat setting by Palestrina (16th century), and the female chorus movements of Stravinsky’s 1952 Cantata (based on the old English texts of the “Lyke-Wake Dirge”), all accompanied by a small instrumental ensemble.
